~ HDR Attempt ~

I am an HDR noob....here is 3 shots I took on my way to work today. I hand held these from my car, too lazy to get the tripod set up, was also late for work.

I had a BAD day at work, hoping to have an awesome weekend and let some stress go. :)

~ Joel and Jessica ~
Finally getting some new edits done for Jessica and Joel. They are a lovely couple getting married this summer and guess who has the honor of shooting their wedding? :)

The Cranberries - Zombie

This song is awesome. :)

~ COLD Weather ~

I love Alberta, -40 and then by the end of the week, supposed to be +8. Crazy days of March, March Madness for shure.

I am off to work, just did a quick edit from back when I started doing model photography. I had the chance to shoot with the awesome AntiSaint, aka Christina. She is a talented model, has some really cool ideas and looks when shooting with her. She is a blast to work with and really knows how to give the camera some great looks.

As for the Oilers....they picked up a point in Montreal, I guess it could of been worse. But it was a typical Oiler loss....give up the lead....choke in overtime by taking dumb penalties.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

~ Lou-Anne ~

Jenn's buddy Lou-Anne likes to tease me about the Oilers. She recently lived in Alberta but is now back in Ontario (center of the Universe).....she likes to call once and awhile and try and talk like she knows about hockey. On Saturday night the Oilers layed a beat down on the Leafs, so Lou-Anne now has to have her facebook profile changed to show she lost a bet....and that the Oilers rule forever and ever. :) She knows the Leafs suck but she claims it doesn't matter, for some silly reason. She even still thinks Sundin is a Leaf.....hee hee.

This is a pic of her when she was living in Oil country. :)

We were going to Edmonton to hit Red Willow and pick up our friend Ellen...however the snow was NASTY and we stayed home. Hmmm, March isn't messing around.

Here is another picture of Nahla Pearl, who at this moment is curled up in my lap sleeping. She is REALLY warm. :)

~ Weekend is Here ~

So I did some art today, took a sketchbook picture and tried colouring it on my computer using photoshop. It's not what I imagined, or how I'd like it to look. But for a first attempt in a few years I am happy with it. :) I would love to colour like a pro....and paint digitally....maybe one day I'll master it all. :)

~ Friday ~

Oilers lose again.....this team is starting to get scared of success. Seems they like losing to all the teams they should be winning against. Sigh......

Anyway. it's the weekend, yippeeeeeeeeee. I am telling myself I NEED to work on an art project this weekend. I hope to post it here as soon as it's done....or maybe even post a work in progress shot. I am craving to do some digital art and hope to have something to work on quite soon.

Here is a recent picture of Nahla Pearl, my wife's kitty on her fave spot....(top of our fridge)....I am tall enough to take pics of her up there. I forget all you vertically challenged people can't...muhahahhahah, it's fun being 6'7".

~ Wild Weather ~

MARCH in like a Lion for sure. This weather was crazy, I looked out my window this morning and saw the snow blowing in our back yard. I left as early as I could and as I drove through massive drifts in town, heading toward the highway, I knew this would be a risky drive. When I got out by the Wal-Mart I could hardly see the Tim Hortons at the side of the road. When I left Vegreville and reached the highway the area I was able to see around my car was maybe 40-50 feet. I turned around when it was safe and came home. I heard the busses were not running so I decided to not risk the drive as the radio was saying the roads were NOT good.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the weekend, hoping the weather relaxes a little. Work is stressing me out, I feel like there is so much to do and that I am behind it all constantly. **sigh**

I did buy a new watch and swiss army knife, lol...don't ask....but these 2 purchases make me happy.....I know....I am a strange dude. :) Here is a shot of a good friend and teacher, Lindsey at our staff meeting. Shot with my 50mm, it's a cool St.Patty shot. :) There wasn't any alcohol in her cup...hehehhe, our staff meetings might be more fun if there was. :) heheheh.

~ Tuesday ~

Going to go see a doctor about my back and leg tonight after school. Hope he can restore my leg, still have limited feeling in it. I know, not so cool. I hope I can get myself fixed up soon.

Not much is new. I am on twitter now, if you noticed on the top of mine blog. It's an interesting little website. I added a lot of the artists I admire and people involved in comics. Yes I am a comic book geek, lots of them in boxes in my basement.

Anyway, have a great day everyone out there in the blog universe.

~ New Surround Sound....oh yeah and a Good Weekend!!! ~

Well, it was a great weekend. Enjoyed time with my sweetheart....got to go to Red Willow....Pastor Dan you rock as always. :) I got to see the High Roller briefly......aka Trevor Boller. Then we had a funny experience at a Moxies. Our waitress came and was explaining a dish to my beautiful wife. She had a Freudian slip and said "the dish comes with a curry dick", then proceeded to blush, nervously laugh and apologize profusely to my wife for her slip. We had a good laugh. I think she deserved a good tip for her humor.

Jenn also was an awesome wife and allowed me to get an early Anniversary present. I got a lovely surround sound system from Costco. It's an LG and it's a home theater in a box deal. We set it up in our basement.....it is pretty sweet. Now when I watch Oiler games in the basement I can shake my fillings out. How sweet it is to be a home owner and not a rented. My neighbours would hate me if I was renting, **evil grin**.

Oilers also won!!!! Yippeeeeeeee, the Mac-T roller coaster continues. Only was I'll love him and want him to keep his job is if he brings home the cup...heheheh. I am hard to please.....give me a break, they have been mediocre for too long for him to get breaks from the fans. :)

Well, I am gonna have a good sleep and good week (fingers crossed) spring come soon please. I am posting some pictures of my awesome cats. They were so cute. It was a typical cat weekend here at our home. :)

Wordle: Obama's Congressional address Feb 24 09
This was a www.wordle.net of the words used in Obama's congressional address...pretty cool. :) I like how small the word Iraq is, George Bush used it every 3 words it seemed. Obama is just so cool. :)

~ Wednesday ~

Feb. is almost done, YAY, getting so close to spring, I can't wait to get outside more with my camera. I am going to hit that vagabond II like a madman this year. I got it kind of late in the year last year and did not really get much play in with it. I think my challenge with it will be learning to meter it and using natural light mixed with strobe. I did okay learning to use my 430ex but that helped because it was in sync with my 40d, the alien bee's are going to be under moi control. So it'll be up to me to get it "right".....but that is the fun of photography. You get those "happy" surprises sometimes and it just turns out right.

I think my goals this summer season are going to be:

  • more nature
  • more natural light and strobe shots
  • hopefully more male models (still don't have enough in my portfolio)
  • more couples (wanna try some new ideas of shooting couples for my port)
  • more babies, heheheh (practice for when I have one and for my port)
  • more kids
  • more pets/animals (maybe) hehehe, if I can get away from shooting my kittens
  • Hmmmm, that's a long list, I prob will never get through :P

The weather has got really cold and I am sure missing those days of nice warm weather we were having. The Oilers decided tonight they want to play hockey and actually got a win!!!!!!!!! I am happy, I shall wear my Oiler uni tomorrow for work. :)

I went to a cool website today called wordle.net and it made this awesome picture for me using words off of my blog. So I thought I'd just share that with people reading my blog today. It's an awesome site and I plan to use it with my students at school.

~ Older Shots ~

Sometimes, (okay a LOT of times) I like to go back and edit from previous shoots. It is what makes me happy, I guess it's my form of artistic expression and a lot cleaner then getting out the acrylic paints and making a mess. Here is a shot of Shantelle I took awhile back. I used my 430ex and used an off camera bracket for this shot. It was a LOT of fun, windy and a bit cold and Shantelle just always looks great....so I have tons of worthy images to edit from our shoots. Hopefully we can do some updated shots soon. I recently heard from her and she is interested in doing more work. I hope to do more outdoor and on location work with her. I think it'd be awesome to go out with the vagabond and go crazy. :)

~ Monday ~

Today was a wild Monday, I awoke feeling so tired. It was rough, I should of got more sleep on the weekend. However I got a copy of Street Fighter IV and well, it was fun....heheheh. I have fond memories of playing that game in the arcade. Sneaking out of my studio courses at Red Deer College and going to the student arcade with buddies and wasting a bit of our student loans on that game. It is also the first arcade game I really remember playing as a teen. I was in love with Chun Li's character...hehehe, I always chose her to fight with. Those wicked kicks of hers....yeah.....so back to the present. I was thinking I'd rock at this game but turns out my reflexes are not like they were 15 years ago. I also have more trouble pulling off the mad moves needed to succeed at this game. The boss is named "Seth" and is almost impossible to defeat.

I have to say I am going to try and get to bed early tonite, a LOADED day tomorrow. I'll need my rest. I won't even rant about the Oilers losing to the Shames on Saturday night. That's a whole other rant for another day....heheheh....(hiding my rage).

~ Whacky Wednesday ~

Random Thoughts:

The good news of the day is my back pain is almost gone...I'd say I am running at 80% which is great for me. I feel a bit of pain but nothing near what I was having a few days ago. I feel for people with chronic back pain and hope I never have to go through this on a regular basis.

Today will be a long day, I am staying late at work for a meeting so I don't expect to be home until quite late. Oh well, it'll be a good reason to get some extra work done @ work.

The Oilers are starting a TYPICAL playoff run....they win, win, win and then LOSE......just enough to tease their fans. It's like they fear success...they look like an awesome team, then POW, back to playing below average. This team seems unable to get over the hump of being an average team. HINT TO OILER MANAGAMENT: NEW COACH, NEW COACH.....look at the rest of the NHL teams, if this was the Penguins, Mac T would be long gone. I think he was an awesome player, but players don't make great coaches.....so, ummm, yeah, get a new coach plz Edmonton.

Sleep, I wish I could of slept in today...it's just one of those days I wish I could lay in bed and sleep the day away. I think I am going to be resting up this weekend.....nap time here I come.

Well, I entered my photo and was not even in the top 3.....(sob, sob)...heheheh. The good news is the Oilers won!!! 7-2 over the HABS....it's about time Oil.

Anyway, the 3 finalists are posted on the Oiler website and I am seriously wondering who at ATB picks finalists. Anyway, I'll try not to be a sore loser...(ATB sucks)...:). They can be sure I'll never do business with them again.....I am sure they are not going to care....considering I am no where near a rich dude.

Oh well, our classroom has a Wii and we have a fun day today....yipeeeee!!.....so I'll just forget that they didn't pick my picture and love my long weekend......hope everyone at ATB works like dogs this long weekend....muhahahahah.

~ Oilers Contest ~

Okay, I drove out to my vp's place and was able to do a shoot with Billy. He was a great sport and did a great job in helping me achieve my idea. I was a tool however and lets just say due to brain freeze I mangled up my umbrella's quite badly. Hoping Jenn and her delicate touch can fix them for me, knowing me I'll just snap them in rage trying to fix them. :) Love the soft touch of a woman.
So I have a deadline until noon today to enter a picture and here are the two I came up with from the shoot. I don't know which one I'll enter...here's to hoping I pick right. Yeah, only 1 more day of work till the weekend.

~ Music and Art ~

I think music and art go hand in hand. In art school, we had our studio classes pumping with music. I love all genres of music...depending on my mood I will listen to a little bit of everything. Like this moment I have some Tone Loc playing....I find when I am doing a photo shoot or editing I have to listen to some music. Music fills those gaps of what would be awkward silence when I am setting lights up or doing something that requires my mental effort. I am after all a male and we suck at multi tasking in the best of times. Music sets a mood for the shoot and can really get the model in the mood to be in front of the camera.

People that know me quite well, can testify how varied my taste in music is. One minute hardcore rapping, the next old school church music. I'll listen to top 40....but also to bands most people have never heard of like the Cadillac Tramps or The Holmes Brothers which are one of my faves. Music keeps the wheels in my brain a turning.

Tomorrow I am going to be shooting my picture to enter in to the Edmonton Oilers, Spirit Of Hockey contest. The deadline is fast approaching and I am eager to get my take in. If I were to win I would be ready to retire. :) For me to win a photography contest related to my all time favourite hockey club would be an honor. The prizes would just be icing on the cake. I will be asking for everyone that stumbles over my blog to vote for me. The big test is making the finals, only the finalists will have their work posted on the Oiler website. The voting only lasts for a few days so be ready to vote people. I am going to shoot tomorrow and hopefully have the entry mailed in before noon on Wednesday. This will take some mad photoshop skills, because my entry is going to be photoshop intensive and if it turns out anything like my mental image of it, I'm going to be in the hunt for winning this baby. (cross your eyes, toes oh yeah and fingers too please)

~ I won!!!! ~

My back is on the mend, there is less pain and I am starting to look forward to being able to walk normal again. This whole back pain stuff is not fun.
My happy news for the day is I won a photo contest. I won first place in the category of Urban Life on the connect to Edmonton website. I appreciate everyone that got on there and voted for my picture. I was surprised when they contacted me and told me I had been short listed and had a chance at winning.
Teacher Convention was fun, got to see some old colleagues of mine, the worst part was trying to walk around the Shaw with a sore back. I probably looked like some drug addict the way I was walking. I hope I can get my back feeling better....I have been resting it all weekend, hope it helps. Not much else is new....so I'll end this post with my winning image.

Her Morning Elegance / Oren Lavie

I saw this on nakedeye's blog and decided it's too cool not to post on my blog too, hehehe. (copy cat achievement)

Did you know? Technology.

I think stuff like this just shows how fast things are moving now with technology...I wonder how all this fast moving technology is going to impact students today, families and relationships as we speed along at such a fast pace and with seemingly litle regard for how it is impacting people, the planet and just our every day life.

~ Kitty Little Death Trap ~

So, there I was on Saturday trying my best to add a little fresh little for my kittens. I reached down to pick up the box of litter, (not the costco kind that weights tons) this was just a smallish box, that even a frail granny could lift. The big tall photographer who is used to lifting 70-200mm canon glass around and a heavy old 40d, grabbed this kitty litter and then POP!!! In the lower back a thousand little voices all screamed out in pain. Then I went and threw away my man card and proceeded to act like something just the opposite. I have no pain tolerence and it was good that Jenn was in Calgary, because she wouldn't of wanted to see my sad scene of self pity and agony. I did pull myself together, but wow!!! I never thought the back could hurt like that. I did go to see the doctor today and have a GREAT collection of narcotics aimed at helping myself get back to "normal" whatever that might be.

I did watch the super bowl, it was quite entertaining, I just didn't have much interest in either team but it's the NFL and it was fun for me to watch. I am also excited it's a short week. I have teacher convention Thur and Fri at the SHAW!!! I hope the back holds up as I hike around from session to session. Ohhh and Tammy if you're reading this, we need to chat, I need to find out if I am still shooting that wedding for you still....heheheh. Yeah and I need that 5D you said you didn't want anymore.

~ Jessica and Joel Engagement Photo Shoot ~ (see my professional blog for more images)
I was honored to take some engagement photos of an awesome couple, Jessica and Joel. The weather isn't ideal so we took the shoot to the studio and got some great shots on the white paper background. They are a great looking couple and it was a lot of fun to shoot with them. I am excited to work on the rest of these photos.
It helped take my mind off the Oilers being crushed by the Sabres. Not that I had very high hopes for the Oilers this year anyway. It's great that February is almost here. It'll be a fun month, some holidays, some teacher convention....it'll be good.

~ Monday - Out of Shape - Need Sleep ~

Well, our little school won the recreational ball hockey tournament at EIPS. It was a lot of fun, our team Chix with Stix was awesome. For a team of all ladies + moi and my principal we did great. We had a players that never played hockey before but I do think if you're Canadian it's in your genetic code to play hockey. Some teams we played were mostly men and it was really cool to see our school do some bonding and showing teamwork. But best of all was just how much fun it was. Mind you, the next day was NOT fun for me. I realized my lack of physical activities in the past few years and sports have taken it's toll on my body. I am VERY sore and pretty much every part of my body. I think it's time for me to get serious and start to work out and get myself back in to some kind of shape. The winning team received a golden stick and our school will be rewarded with it at our PD day on Friday. :) It's fun for a small school like ours to get win something like this. Teachers are a competitive bunch and it's a blast when you can claim bragging rights. :) Well, now I get to limp around work today and pretty much feel shame for being so outta shape.

~ The Moment ~

I think that photography is amazing. However it seems there are photographers out there...and yes you know who you are. These photographers are the "technical" nerds, the ones that obsess over lighting and over all the technical aspects of photography. These photogs need to always see sharp images and technically sound photos. Their gear and the lenses they use must be top of the line. I think far too often this type of photographer loses the moment in the quest to get that "perfect" image. I have been learning more that the moment is far more important then the light, the sharpness. Sometimes it's the moment that matters most. Let me explain. I shot a wedding where I had the couple select an image to be printed. She picked an image I liked but when I went to edit it for print. It had a blury area on it that happened do to movement when I shot the picture. There was nothing I could do in photoshop to fix it so I thought it probably wasn't a good image to use. However after looking at it I could see it was a special shot even with that "flaw" and the couple liked the moment in the picture.
I am starting to try and find those moments in my pictures now and hope that I can try not to become obsessive about being one of those technical nerds and allow the pictures to just happen. A few years ago I was doing this shoot and caught the model adjusting her boots and this was not a posed shot. I had my camera ready and snapped this shot. It is one of my faves from the shoot and happened when we were both not really "trying" for anything amazing. It just happened. I think that quest for L glass and great SLR bodies needs to be set aside sometimes and the moments need to be caught. There will always be an amazing SLR on the market, always be great lenses to buy. But those moments come once in a lifetime and it's up to the photographers to catch them. So use a point and shoot, a SLR, a disposable...just catch them.
Oh yeah and Oilers win!!! :)

~ Finally No More Bush ~

POLITICAL RANT OF THE DAY: I think the world is going to be quite happy to see Bush ride in to the sunset today. I think in his deluded world he probably thinks he was the saviour of freedom. I do think when he looks in the mirror every day he does not see the man that made horrid mistakes and decisions. There is no doubt he'll live his days out on this earth as a VERY rich man. He'll want for nothing and always have plenty of everything he needs. It's sad to think of the lives he ruined as a leader, the people that were impacted not only in Iraq but many Americans. I think Obama is going to create some change and look forward to where the United States is going to go as a country. Lets hope America has learned it's lesson and can turn the page on the Bush era. Learn from those mistakes and please don't allow a leader like that to ever take office again.

Bush was a great person to spoof, but I'll take a leader like Obama if it means less hilarious Bush quotes and awesome SNL skits. I do think Bush will go down as one of the dumbest presidents, most people realize now what a mistake he was. Today is a great day for freedom, hehehehe, now hopefully Obama can start cleaning up the mess Bush left.

~ Jenn Jammin ~
Today is NFL playoff football, I am cheering for the Cardinals vs the Eagles. I am also hoping the Ravens win vs the Steelers. It's also Glen Anderson retirement night at Rexall. The Oilers will hoist his number up and honor him for his years as an Oiler. He was one intense player, who can forget his driving to the net skills and how much fun he was to see play. Anyway, I am off to enjoy this warm day and get some work done.
This pic is of Jenn at Wolfe's place Jamming with her friend Ellen on the weekend. :)

This was a REALLY tough week for me. Work was rough, just nothing really went as planned. Glad I made it to the weekend. Also glad that the Oilers traded Garron away to the Penguins. Now hopefully the 3 way goalie problems they were having will go away. Not much to say, I'm fighting a nasal cold....(yeah it's gross). Just tired and pretty much feeling winter blues, even though it's warm and sunny today. Looking forward to summer and NOT teaching.

This weekend was a lot of fun. We went curling at the ELK ISLAND ATA CURLING TOURNAMENT in Edmonton. Chandra, Lindsay and Joanne (peeps I work with) were repping LES. We did okay, I am VERY sore and think I was smart to now go in to a life of professional curling as I am NOT very good. :) I had fun though and it was good to get out and socialize with people I work with. I'll have pics to post soon on the curling. For now I need to go do some stuff to prepare for tomorrow. Have fun people.

Driving Rant

Okay, it's time for me to have a rant, I need to do this for my own therapy so please skip reading this if rants are annoying to you. I am just really getting tired of the drivers I meet on the roads in this province. I am going to be picking on the men, yes my own gender. I am starting to think that this province of Alberta is full of guys that drive rig rocket trucks. Me in my tiny little Echo seem to be a magent for these morons. They fly up behind me and with no regard for their life or mine. These guys act like no one loves them by the way they drive. This whole province seems to be full of beer drinking, 4x4 driving rednecks that grew up thinking men should be jerks and there for they do their best to fit that role every day of their life. I know there are lots of people, including men that don't drive like jerks but sadly this province with it's "oil and money" attract these types of biscuits to Alberta. It seems that these cavemen and their big trucks measure each other by the size of their tires, lift kits and how many ATV's they can fit in their truck. I really wish people could show more respect for others, I seriously find that more and more this world is lacking respect. People are so self centered and interested in going places fast with little regard for their life or the lives of others. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. :) END OF RANT. :)

2009 | No More Holidays

Well, this is the LAST day of holidays for me.....(insert Randy crying sounds here). Yes, the holidays were awesome and full of fun. Jenn and I loved being able to hang with our friends, our cats and just have some good times. My friend Sonny and I had some extreme gaming sessions to end the holidays. We got each other the game Call of Duty (World at War) for Christmas...he came to visit and we set up our xbox's in the basement. I had the 42" LCD and Sonny was on the TINY 19" LCD and we gamed hardcore till some VERY late hours. Let me say, if life we like the SIMS game my hygene meter got VERY low. We had a ton of fun and I am addicted to that Call of Duty madness. It's so much fun, calling in artillery strikes on the enemy, calling in attack dogs to hunt the enemy down, driving in tanks, it was a ton of fun and I was glad to act like I was a kid again, heheheh. So tomorrow it's back to the real world and responsibilities, stress, and all the fun stuff associated with work. Photography wise I am hoping to post some news in the next few days....weeks about new stuff coming this year from Randy Pond Photography. I'm hoping 2009 will be a successful year for my photography work and I am looking forward to pushing my skills and techniques a lot more to give my work an even stronger look and feel. :)
Okay, it's my last day of holidays so I am going to go chill out and watch football and possibly game a bit more....heheheh. Happy New Year everyone.....yay Oilers for winning in 2009!!
